Today’s readings all speak of living with fear and concern – and how the saving power of God supports and sustains us through difficult times.
It’s impossible to know how we will react when serious loss or tragedy hits. Until that time comes, it’s easy to say that our faith is solid and unshakeable. However, serious illness, the loss of a job, betrayals, or encountering the dark side of life “up close and personal” isn’t easy. We often need to develop a more mature faith, or risk sinking into the illusion that God has abandoned us.
If we are fortunate, we will have companions during the rough times who will remind us of God’s presence. Of course, as Christians, we know that God is always present. As today’s readings explain:
“The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face”… “Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side”… “I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance, and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” St. Paul reminds us, however, “Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.”
In fact, no matter what problems we face, we have been promised the kingdom. We have been promised a beautiful life – if not now, it will happen in the future. We have been invited to the Banquet. We only need to accept God’s often repeated invitations: “Come to my Banquet; Follow Me.” When we embrace God’s generous gifts and kindnesses, we can discover the strength and peace that we desire.
