Re: Diocesan Legal Representation for Local Parishes
Dear Members of the Catholic Community of Saint Stephen – Saint Patrick,
As a result of the Diocese of Syracuse chapter 11 Bankruptcy, which occurred on June 19, 2020, local parishes are now exposed to issues and actions related to the bankruptcy and to law suits under the Child Victims Act (CVA). Bankruptcy protects the Diocese interests, but not local parishes. The Diocese has retained legal assistance to address claims made (or which might be made) under the extended protections of the CVA and now require that local parishes join this effort.
By retaining this legal counsel local parishes will be joining the Diocese and other parishes to be included in legal advice related to the ongoing Chapter 11, as well as advice related to claims of clergy abuse.
Our Parish signed the Retention Agreement, and will be paying an initial fee of $1,000. for The Catholic Community of Saint Stephen – Saint Patrick and an additional $500. fee for Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This letter is intended to inform you of this action.
Sincerely,
Fr. Doug Cunningham
