Dear Parishioners,
Grace and peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you! In today’s gospel story, we see that Jesus honors God through his work. In Jesus’ work, there is no time for that sort of exclusive holiness. In healing the blind man, he used the most ordinary things, rather than anything special or sacred. He spits on the ground, makes some mud from his spittle and the earth, and smears it over the eyes of the blind man. Then he tells him – on the Sabbath, of all days! – to go to the pond at Siloam to wash his face and eyes.
There is something else in this story which is so often overlooked. Before he does anything at all, Jesus says: “As long as the day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me,” (q:4). The word “we” in this text is intriguing. In many translations it is replaced by the word “I”, but the original text reads “we”. It is a small word, but important, nonetheless, as it implies that we are all involved in God’s work. This simple phrase bridges the gulf between the works of God and human activity. No wonder that the clerics around Jesus view him as a threat – so great a threat, in fact, that they eventually decide to kill him.
It never occurs to most of us that our everyday activities can be part of God’s work. We can all honor God through our daily work, whether we deliver mail, look after children, repair cars, serve in a restaurant, heal the sick, or whatever else we do. Remember that when Jesus says, “We must carry out the work of the one who sent me”, he is including each and everyone of us.
