Second Pillar of our Church’s Social Teaching

DID YOU KNOW? The second pillar of our Church’s Social Teaching is the concept of the “common good as defined by Pope St. John XXIII and quoted in the Vatican II document, Gaudium et Spes: the common good is ‘the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily.’” What does this mean for us?

1. We should respect all humans …no matter their race, religion, sexual orientation, financial background

2. We should work for the social well- being of all people assisting with housing, food, medical care

3. We should work towards peace among all people so they feel secure and safe

At times we might be called to provide ‘hands on’ care for a neighbor or community member who needs food, transportation to appointments. As a parish our Human Development Ministry and our Neighbor to Neighbor Ministry provides assistance when they are notified of a need. At times we might be asked to help out with the needs in another country by providing financial assistance through an organization. This week, let’s pray for each other that our eyes and hearts may be open more to see and respond to the needs for the Common Good of all.
